Originally, T'Challa earned the right to become the King of Wakanda and the nation's protector as Black Panther, but his reign was nearly cut short after being put in a coma by Doctor Doom. While out of action, his sister stepped into action and assumed his place as the Black Panther. When T'Challa made a full recovery, this meant that Wakanda now had two active Black Panthers for the first time in its history.
