It is a basic instinct to want to pump out a sequel to a successful movie, but sometimes the best thing for a franchise's longevity is a well-deserved break from theater screens. While goodwill can bring an audience back for a sequel, nostalgia, and anticipation can do even more, especially for a franchise that had worn out its welcome, but then audiences grew to miss. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Top Gun: Maverick, and Avatar: The Way of Water all benefited from having a long gap since their last entry, and other franchises might take a page from their books.
